The Reality of the Muslim Brotherhood :: Hudson New York
Provided as a different point of view on the possible nature of Egyptian democracy. As I have previously expressed here, the Western definition of democracy to include certain personal rights and freedoms may not be congruent with the Middle Eastern (specifically: Arab) understanding of democracy, which may include participatory elections, but exclude personal freedoms such as freedom of religion.
Projecting our cultural and political values onto completely disparate meta cultural structures is bound to lead to disappointment. It will also tempt out leaders to make certain assumptions that are not supported by reality; for instance, that democracies do not wage war on one another, or that people in a democracy are primarily interested in personal economic and cultural fulfillment.
Egyptian democracy may be a gift to the Egyptian people, but be careful about making assumptions about what it means in terms of relations with neighbours and erstwhile allies.
